What is the Mandela Effect? The Mandela Effect is a social phenomenon where a group of people misremember a detail or event that never happened. The term was coined by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome after she discovered that many people shared her false memory that Nelson Mandela died in prison in the 1980s. In reality, Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and died in 2013.
